The Back Story:

Avalon Bay Lookout

Picturesque Holly Hill House, with its distinctive conical “tower” and hillside perch overlooking the harbor, has been a local landmark on Catalina Island since 1890. Civil engineer Peter Gano built the vintage Queen Anne-style cottage for himself and a fiancée who reportedly decided that life on the island 26 miles from the mainland wasn’t for her. He lived there for the rest of his life; subsequent owners named it “Holly Hill” for the abundant holly bushes that surround it.
