The Penny
The Back Story:
Lincoln Penny
Today’s Lincoln Penny, one of America’s most recognizable coins, retains the original design featuring a bust of Abraham Lincoln as when the series began production in 1909. The front of the coin depicts the bust with IN GOD WE TRUST above, LIBERTY to the left, and the date to the right. Lucky collectors of the 1909-S V.D.B. cent will find the initials of the designer Victor David Brenner on the bottom of the coin’s back. Brenner broke with tradition by placing the image of an actual person on a coin intended for circulation, but the inclusion of his initials created an uproar and they were removed later that year.
