The Back Story:

Celebrated WWII Bomber

The B-17 Flying Fortress four-engine bomber dropped more bombs during World War II than any other U.S. aircraft, and quickly became a symbol of American weapons power. Manufactured by Boeing for the U.S. Army Air Corps, the B-17 flew many daytime precision bombing raids over Germany.
This famous high-altitude bomber was equipped with heavy machine gun armament to defend itself while raining heavy bomb-loads on cities, factories and battlefields. Its ability to survive belly-landings relatively unscathed and to withstand heavy battle damage and still get back “home” to airfields in England and Italy was legend. After years of wartime service, many B-17s were converted for use as aerial tankers to fight forest fires in the western United States.
