The Back Story:

The Bent Wing Bird

The Corsair F4U flew in experimental version in May 1940, and quickly became a staple of the U.S. Marine Corps’ land-based fighter squadrons. Its speed (425 mph), maneuverability and firepower (six wing-mounted 50 caliber machine guns) made it one of the best all-around fighter-bombers of World War II.
In the last six months of the war, the mighty little warbird was flown by both Marine and Navy pilots from Pacific Fleet carrier decks. The Corsair’s distinctive inverted gull-wing design allowed plenty of clearance for the oversized three-bladed prop when landing on aircraft carriers.
The F4U series ended production in 1953 after once again proving itself a formidable foe in the Korean War.
