Hawaiian Masi Cloth Design
The Back Story:
Ni Sa Bula Vinaha
Fiji is well known for its beautiful hand made Masi cloth, a traditional bark-cloth made from the Paper Mulberry tree. These natural colored cloths are recognized by the intricate patterns that are stenciled, stamped or smoked onto the fabric. The patterns are said to give life, like the old mysteries of elven paintings in Celtic lore. The “masi” patterns evoke “i yalo,” a spirit, an aura of a presence you can almost see in the light flickering through the palm leaves, in the ripples on the water, or in the layers of misty mountains.
Give this as Masi cloth was given: With “ni sa bula vinaha” or “a wish of a happy and successful life.”
