The Back Story:

A Great Success

French inventor Louis Bleriot’s delicate-looking monoplane was a stark contrast to the more common biplanes of its day. When Bleriot flew it across the English Channel, 22 miles of open water in 36 minutes, his achievement electrified aviation enthusiasts and showed the world a practical use for powered flight.
By 1913, Bleriot’s factories built more than 800 Bleriot XI aircraft as touring models, trainers, military aircraft and racing machines. Constructed of oak and poplar, its flying surfaces were cloth-covered. The aft fuselage was left uncovered. Wing warping gave the craft additional lateral stability; its tail had a rudder and horizontal stabilizer, but no vertical stabilizer.
