America’s ability to both prevent and fight a war to protect our nation’s national security is assured by the men and women who serve in one of the branches of the U.S. Armed Forces – the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps – and the numerous federal agencies that support defense operations. This activity falls beneath the umbrella of the United States Department of Defense (DoD), headquartered at the Pentagon.
In 1997, the DoD marked its first 50 years of existence as a civilian-run, Presidential Cabinet-level entity devoted to overseeing America’s military establishment. In peace-time and war-time, from the American Revolution through two world wars and today’s challenging peacekeeping missions, the defense community has proudly served the cause of liberty.
