The Back Story:
Early Staple of Commercial Aviation
The Ford Tri-Motor was a dependable transport aircraft that earned its permanent place in aviation history. First introduced by Henry Ford in 1925, it quickly became a favorite of commercial airline companies as well as the military. About 200 of the sturdy all-metal airplanes with aluminum wings were produced until 1933.
The “Tin Goose” (as it was affectionately called) had three air-cooled radial engines and a wingspan of over 77 feet. It carried eight or nine passengers plus a crew of three. Transcontinental Air Transport (which later became part of TWA) used the Ford Tri-Motor to inaugurate the nation’s first regular coast to coast air service in 1929.
