The Back Story:

The Story of Hex Signs

The story that the Pennsylvania German farmers made ‘Hex Signs’ on their barns to keep the evil spirits away or to bring them good luck, has been around for many years. However scholars still can’t agree on the true origins of the practice. Eventhough the Pennsylvania farmers of German heritage were a superstitious lot, their forefathers in Europe rarely painted designs on houses and buildings. It wasn’t until the mid to late 19th century that these signs appeared on their barns in this country. As a matter of fact, barns and houses weren’t generally painted at all much before 1830. The ‘Hex Signs’ only became synonymous with the Pennsylvania Dutch around the 1940’s.
