Hex Sign
The Back Story:
Paradise
The ‘modern-age’ of the Pennsylvania Dutch hex sign is considered to have it’s beginning in the town of Paradise, Pennsylvania. According to Jacob Zook, the ‘Hex Man’, “Paradise is where it all started in 1942”. Zook was intrigued by some of the hex signs he saw and was curious to find out more about them. It wasn’t until he met Johnny Ott, a church elder who became his mentor, that he came to understand the art and lore of these quaint, colorful pieces of Americana. Together they designed and painted the signs, built up a regional following, and eventually a national reputation. The signs became both an attraction for tourism and an identity for the community.
