The Back Story:

What Are Hex Signs?

It wasn’t until the middle third of the 19th century, perhaps because barns weren’t generally painted at all much before 1830, that the big colorful signs were first seen painted on the huge red barns in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. The signs, which were originally geometric have since evolved to include more elaborate decorations such as distelfinks and other  Pennsylvania Dutch trademark designs. They were painted directly on the sides of barns by one of the community’s ‘hexenmeisters’. The hexenmeister or hexmaster, when he wasn’t designing hexes, was typically a barn painter by trade.
