The Back Story:
Oval Butterfly Fish - (Chaetodon lunulatus)
Butterflyfish are small, thin, disk-shaped fish. There are many varieties in most of the oceans across the world, many of which have a characteristic dark band running vertically through each eye. This aids the fish in camouflaging itself on the coral reefs where they live. Most Butterflyfish have pointed snouts, very useful for plucking out the small coral animals and getting into small crevices for tiny invertebrates, which they feed on. This one has the Hawaiian name of “Kapuhili” and is found most often on calm coral reefs in bays, seldom in open reefs.
