The Back Story:

Proven in Combat

Three narrow-chord wings distinguished the Sopwith Triplane from its predecessors. Aviators had never seen anything quite like it when the numble little fighter with superior handling qualities debuted in 1916. Pilots had a good field of view from the open cockpit through the three stacked wings, each fitted with ailerons. Their combined wing area provided plenty of lift for the wooden box girder fuselage, and delivered a fast climbrate.

Although the Sopwith Triplane was lightly armed with a single machine gun, its combat debut with the British Royal Naval Air Service was successful from the beginning. German aircraft manufactureres copied its three-wing design to their efforts to achieve the same aerial performance.
