Golden Mexican Trout

The Back Story:

Viva La Pescado

Although the natural range of the Mexican Golden is farther south than most other trout species, these handsome fish, like other trout, need clean, cold water in which to live. They find it in headwater streams above 6,000 feet in the mountain ranges of two mainland Mexican states: Chihuahua and Durango.
Males are golden-yellow, with orange bellies and lower fins; females are silvery. Both have dark spots scattered along the back, tail and upper fins.
This is the only native Mexican trout that has a formal scientific name. Healthy populations thrive in only three rivers at higher elevations. Downstream, they encounter environmental threats including pollution, poaching and  introduction of non-native fish, such as the rainbow trout,  into their habitat.
