The Back Story:
Waikiki Surfing
Surfing’s ancestral roots run deep in the gentle, easy waves at Honolulu’s Waikiki Beach, an ideal spot for learning to surf. In Hawaii surfing is called “the sport of kings” because its practice was a much-admired skill of the Islands’ original natives and their chiefs. In pre-war years the Matson Lines’ S. S. Malolo cruise liner brought thousands of tourists to the Islands and to the most famous beach in the world at that time, Waikiki. Hawaii’s watermen captivated visitors with their ability to stand on long, narrow wooden planks and ride atop the water for long distances. People from all over the world watched, tried it themselves, and took the exciting “new” sport of surfing back home.
