The Back Story:

Aloha Shirt

This is an image of a genuine, vintage Hawaiian shirt, dated 1940, considered one of the finest of original American folk art. It has a traditional hibiscus, ukulele and lei pattern with periodic Hawaiian words, like “Aloha” scattered throughout. Aloha is the Hawaiian word that extends the warmth, friendliness, and pride of the Hawaiian people to their islands’ visitors. It is difficult to imagine that clothing could capture the essence of a word, but the traditional Hawaiian shirt symbolized the aloha spirit so much that in 1936, a shirt maker named Ellery J. Chun coined the term “Aloha Shirt”. That term stuck and the genuine Hawaiian Aloha shirt is now regarded as a work of art and avidly sought out by collectors.
