The Back Story:
Bear Paw
American black bears have flat feet with 5 toes. Their short, thick, sharp claws are non-retractable and are used for digging, climbing, and handling foods. It is normal to only see the soles of the appendages in tracks and not the claws. Front paw prints resemble our own hands and hind paw prints resemble our own feet. Front paws average about 5x5 inches while the back feet are typically 5x7 inches. They are plantigrade (flat-footed) walkers, as are humans.
