The Back Story:

Sonoran Desert Sentinel

The uplifted arms of the stately saguaro form an immediately recognizable image that symbolizes America’s southwestern desert for people around the world.
A slow-growing giant, the saguaro doesn’t produce its first arm until it’s about 75 years old. A five-armed saguaro may soar to heights over 30 feet in its 200-year lifetime. Its night-blooming flowers, about three inches across, feature creamy-white petals surrounding a yellow center. Saguaro blossoms are Arizona’s official flower.
Serving as refuge in the blistering desert climate, a mature saguaro provides shelter to birds who nest inside its trunk. In return, they eat insects that could harm the saguaro and interfere with its long-term survival.
