Celebrants of special occasions lift their glasses in tribute to the honoree or to the camaraderie of the group. In cultures all over the world, toasts are traditional for expressing congratulations and goodwill, accompanied by raised glasses and a drink in which everyone participates.
“Cheers” is always an appropriate toast in any language, from the German Prosit (“Here’s to you”) to the Italian Salute (“To your health”) and the Korean Konbai (“Bottoms up”). The Chinese say Ganbei (“Dry glass”), the Israelis proclaim L’chaim (“To life”) and in Mexico, it’s Salud (“Good health”).
