The Back Story:
Crazy as a Loon
The varied calls of the Common Loon, from the sound of maniacal laughter to yodeling, sets this aquatic bird apart from others. Naturalist John Muir once remarked that they have "one of the wildest and most striking of all wilderness sounds." Besides its strange calls, it has a habit of lifting one webbed foot above the water and waggling it. Hence came the term, "Crazy as a loon." Though they are clumsy on land, legs placed further back on their bodies make them strong swimmers. Scientists believe the loon to be the oldest and most primitive species of bird.
