The Back Story:

Downhill Skiing

Alpine skiing became an Olympic event in 1948 at the Games in St Moritz, Switzerland. The rules for the Downhill were developed by Sir Arnold Lunn for the 1921 British National Ski Championships. The Downhill involves high speeds and the greatest risks of all alpine events. Racers on an international-level course will exceed speeds of 80 mph., but over speeds of 90 mph, at the Lauberhorn course in Wengen, Switzerland, and the Hahnekamm course in Kitzbühel, Austria. Competing in the Downhill event requires great strength and high speed technical expertise.
