Modern re-enactments remind us that the Old West was not always as romantic and exciting as song and story would have us believe. To the real-life cowboy, nothing was more grueling than the long cattle drive, known as “the hardest way to earn a hundred dollars.” While the trail boss rode ahead to scout for water and pasture, cowhands rode on the rear and sides for hours at a time, keeping the strays moving with stinging flicks of their ropes and prodding the rest in line. At trail’s end, the bone-weary cowhands finally rode into town, where they could wet their throats with something much tastier and more potent than chuck wagon coffee. ”
