The Back Story:

Fish Tapa

Tonga’s tapa cloth originated on the main Island of Tongatapu, where the paper mulberry tree grows best. When the tree is about 13 feet high the bark is stripped and beaten into pieces up to 65 feet long, then hand-painted with natural brown and tan dyes. The cloth itself is called tapa but the painted product is known as ngatu. Big pieces of ngatu make excellent wall hangings.

Tonga, is a Polynesian sovereign state an island chain of 176 islands scattered over 270,000 square miles of the southern Pacific Ocean.
