The Back Story:
Pennsylvania Dutch Folk Art
Family, religion and duty are common themes in the decorative folk art called “Pennsylvania Dutch.” In reality, the settlers of southeastern Pennsylvania, where these designs originated, were German immigrants with a rich tradition of handmade craftsmanship in their furniture, linens, tools and household utensils. They loved ornamental embellishment, but never at the expense of an item’s intended function.
Hearts, birds and flowers, especially tulips, are traditional motifs. Today’s rendering of Pennsylvania Dutch designs, although often stylized and more colorful than the simple, unpretentious look of the originals that inspired them, are ever-popular motifs in decorative objects for the home.
