The Back Story:
Flowers - A Language all their own
For centuries flowers have given much pleasure to people. Their beauty brings cheer, and their fragrance perfumes the air and can stir the heart. Some can even feed and medicate us with their foliage. Flowers, in the past, have had religious and symbolic meanings with references from Biblical times and throughout the Middle Ages.
Mankind has attached significant meaning to flowers and they have long been linked with romance. It’s no wonder then, that a French writer published a dictionary in the early 17th century that formalized the “Language of Flowers”.
The Victorians particularly adopted this language, which they called ‘floriography’. They used it to communicate messages from the heart that were forbidden in that repressive era. Complex flower arrangements sent ‘coded messages’ and expressed feelings which otherwise could not be spoken.
