The Back Story:

The Mark of The Giraffe

For giraffes, of which there are nine sub-species, unique spot patterns distinguish one group from another, depending on where they live. All giraffes have short, dense fur with darker patches ranging from tan to chestnut brown. Spots cover their entire bodies except their underbellies. The reticulated giraffe’s large brown patches separated by thin contrasting lines are particularly striking. Whatever their spot patterns and coloration, a 16-to-18-foot tall giraffe can blend in among trees and leaves by simply standing still, making it difficult for predators to spot them. Nature’s patterns are both beautiful and practical. An animal’s fur pattern, for example, is unique to its species. Whether stripes, spots or some variation in-between, the purpose is camouflage.
