The Back Story:

Life of a Black Bear Cub

The number of cubs in a litter is usually 2 to 3 in the United States, though litters of up to 6 have been reported in several of the eastern states. At about 10 months, the black bear cub can weigh from 15 to 165 pounds depending on food supply. One to six days before the mothers are ready to mate in late May or June, they force their yearlings to stop traveling with them. This happens approximately 17 months after their birth.
