The Back Story:

Alligator Reef

Alligator Reef Lighthouse sits off the coast of Indian Key and the town of Islamorada, Florida. The lighthouse was built in 1873, named after the 1822 wreck of the USS Alligator that took place near the reef (before the towers construction). Some Florida’s powerful tropical storms have passed over the lighthouse with some winds hitting 200 mph. Its 13-story, skeletal structure allows high grade winds to pass through it rather than blowing it over.

About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
