The Back Story:

American Shoal

The American Shoal lighthouse was the last iron-pile lighthouse built in the Florida Keys. It was finished in 1880 and resembles the Fowey Rocks Lighthouse. It is 109-feet tall and just off shore; like Alligator Reef, it warned ships of near by reefs that could cause harm to ships. In 1963, American Shoal lighthouse was automated, and with it, an end to an era of lighthouses keeping. The light is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard as a current aid to maritime navigation.

About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
