The Back Story:

Cape Canaveral

The current tower at Cape Canaveral is the second lighthouse to be built at that location. The first tower was too short and consequently deemed ineffective. The construction on the second tower had to be halted during the Civil war; as a result the tower was not lit until 1868.  The cast iron construction was designed to allow the lighthouse to be moved if necessary.  It was moved away from the eroding shoreline in the 1880s. The lighthouse is owned by the U.S. Air Force.

About the Artist:Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper’s Log a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org)
