The Back Story:
Key West
The Key West Lighthouse was built in 1848 after a hurricane destroyed the original lighthouse in 1846. It is no longer an active aid to navigation, it was deactivated in 1989. The lighthouse has been open to the public since 1972. A three-year restoration project begun in 1987 restored the station to turn of the 20th century appearance. The Key West Art and Historical Society manages the property and museum.
About The Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper’s Log a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
