The Back Story:
Old Field Point
The Long Beach Bar Lighthouse was first lit on December of 1871, marking the entrance to Peconic Bay in Long Island, New York. At a distance the lighthouse resembled a bug, giving rise to its nickname “Bug Light.” By 1948 the sandbar shifted so far beyond the location of the light that it was no longer useful and eventually decommissioned. With the support of the surrounding community, in 1993 the Coast Guard took over the light, re-establishing it as a federal aid to navigation.
About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
