True Manhole Cover Stories
Nashua, New Hampshire, is phasing out their trademark triangular manhole covers. The two sides of the triangle that were equal in length pointed in the direction of the underlying flow. Chinese government efforts to prevent people from stealing manhole covers, have reduced the annual theft in Beijing to 4,000 in 2005. That’s down from 24,000 in 2004!
In 1990, during a championship auto race in Montreal, a racer struck a `floating´ manhole cover. The cover was lifted by the `ground effect´ of the car he was following. The car’s speed and aerodynamics created so much vacuum it forced the cover up into the air.Today, the rules for championship racing on city streets require that manhole covers be welded down.
