The Back Story:
Mare & Foal
There is a close and tender bond between a mare and its foal. After carrying her foal for 11.5 months and enduring a lengthy delivery, a strong connection is formed between the two. A mare is extremely protective of her foal during its early life, offering its shelter and protection from predators and natural elements. As a foal grows, it is common for it to inspire the mare to "horse around," as they play like kids. In free-ranging herds, weaning often occurs after a year or more, as the foal develops relationships with his or her peers.
