The Back Story:

North American Indian motif

In Native American Art, symbols are often combined, embellished or abstracted.  Plants, primary food sources, tools, materials for basket making and healing provide many images.  In a circular arrangement, almost any symbol is related to the sun and therefore, to the Creator.  Flowers, in particular, are usually connected with the sun.  Common ones such as corn, represent the symbol of life.  Squash, beans, beansprouts and seeds are also very often seen.   Any recurring spiral or whorl is meant to depict the cyclic motion of life, seasons or simply eternal renewal.
