The Back Story:

Famous Fighter & Mission Escort

he Mustang P-51 earned its reputation as one of the most successful fighter planes of the Second World War by helping assure Allied air superiority over Germany in 1944. Most of its war-time missions were flown as long-range escorts, capable of escorting bombers to and from the deepest targets, but P-51s also were used as dive-bombers, interceptors, ground-attackers and on photo reconnaissance missions. Capable of high speeds at low altitudes, P-51 Mustangs also saw service in the Pacific and at the beginning of the Korean War as a tactical bomber. The final production runs of this versatile little fighter featured an American-made frame coupled with a British-designed Rolls-Royce Merlin piston engine.
