Have you wondered how flamingos are so marvelously pink? When these beautiful creatures hatch from their eggs, they are covered in grey plumage, but as they begin to grow their feathers become light pink to bright red due to the aqueous bacteria and beta carotene within their natural food supply. The brighter a flamingo’s feathers, the more nutrients it takes in on a daily basis. The only exception to this rule is when a flamingo is in captivity and not fed a diet rich in carotene. Many zoos and bird sanctuaries have begun adding prawns to their diets, inspired by flamingoes, to display magnificent pinks and reds.
