Jack of Diamonds Playing Card

The Back Story:

Jack of Diamonds

The Jack of Diamonds in both English and French playing decks is popularly thought to be Hector, a mythological hero whose courageous exploits during the Trojan War were told in The Iliad, an ancient Greek epic poem. Jacks were also called “Knaves” (male servants of royalty) as early as the mid-1500s.
Tradition plays a role in the design of standard playing cards. Today’s “court” (or face) cards first appeared in decks designed in France. Theories about which famous personalities from the past are depicted in a modern deck’s 12 face cards abound, but none is proven. Every card enthusiast – players, collectors, gamblers and
card trick performers alike – has their  favorite image.
