The Back Story:

Pre-Columbian Motif

This beautiful early Mexican design was obtained from the surface of a “Malacates”, hand selected by Jorge Enciso (one of the pioneers of Mexico City’s “Mural Renaissance” in the post-revolution 1920’s).    “Malacates”, objects of baked clay found in the oldest of Mexican archeological digs, were very common just before the Conquest of Mexico.  These very early, unknown artists showed great imagination and originality in decorating these objects.  In the large outer circles there often appear motifs of the manlike deities, animals both real and imagined, reptiles, birds, flowers, masks, geometrical figures, frets etc. – employed with all the boldness characteristic of this Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican Art.
