The Back Story:
The WoodCutter
Fine-line engravings, such as this
well-known depiction of a pioneer family, were incorporated into the design of early paper currency to discourage counterfeiting as the U.S. government worked to earn public confidence in paper money.
This vignette, also known among collectors as “Woodcutter,” is featured on the $5 United States Note Series of 1869-1907. The man stands over a pile of split wood, an axe in his left hand and his wife and child behind him. The family dog stands guard to the side. Their log house is surrounded by forest, and the scene is an homage to the hopes and dreams of ordinary Americans of the day.
