The Back Story:
History of Manhole Covers
Before manhole covers, slabs of stone or pieces of wood were used to cover trenches that carried waste water. They kept storm water out of the trench, but allowed easy access when removed.The modern manhole cover was developed in the mid 19th century. The oldest known foundry to make them dates back to 1860. Manhole covers have weighed as much as 300 lbs. Their round shape has been the standard for many reasons, including that they can be rolled to move them. Other shapes have been used, such as square, rectangular and even triangular.
