The Back Story:

An Abundant Alaskan Salmon

Adult Chums (also called “keta” or “dog”) have the widest distribution of all Pacific salmon species. They are plentiful in interior Alaska, where they are traditionally dried as a winter food source, but are less viable as a coastal commercial fishery. The “dog salmon” name comes from the male’s hooked snout and large teeth.
Mature Chums weigh between 6 to 17 lbs.; like other salmon they migrate upstream in the freshwater stream of their birth to spawn and die. Juveniles return almost immediately after hatching to ocean waters and tidal estuaries.
In rivers and waterways blocked by dams and locks, humans build fish ladders that enable salmon to complete the migration and spawning cycles that assuretheir species’ survival.
