The Back Story:

Historic Rt 66 - Americas Mother Road

From its birth in 1926, combining pieces of existing roadway, until official  decommissioning in 1985, US 66 was the most fabled road in the U.S. highway system. Stretching from Chicago to Los Angeles for 2,448 miles, it carried many people west among them migrants fleeing the Dust Bowl drought of the 1930s. The highway, which was not paved end-to-end until 1937, brought increasing traffic—and with it, prosperity—to the small towns through which it passed.
US 66 lives on in American popular culture, immortalized in music (Bobby Troup’s “Get Your Kicks on Route 66…”), literature (John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath”)  and television show (“Route 66,” 1960-64.)
