The Back Story:

French-Built Fighter for Aerial Combat

The SPAD S.XIII was a fast one-seater biplane built by the Société pour l’Aviation et ses Dérivés (thus the name SPAD). It entered service in the summer of 1917, and quickly proved itself in combat to help the Allies claim air superiority in the skies over northern France.
This capable fighter was equipped with twin synchronized machine guns, a rugged airframe and a 220-hp Hispano-Suiza engine that delivered a top speed of 222 km/h (138 mp/h). All the leading WWI aces flew this fighter, including French pilots Georges Guynemer and René Fonck, Italy’s Francesco Baracca, American Eddie Rickenbacker, and Irish ace William Cochran-Patrick who scored more victories with the SPAD S.XIII and its predecessor than any other ace.
