The Back Story:

King Among Salmon

Adult Chinooks (also called “king salmon”) range along North America’s Pacific coast, from Alaska to San Francisco Bay. The largest of all salmon species, an adult Chinook weighs up to 40 lbs., often more, and averages 33 to 36 inches in length.
When Chinooks mature, they return to the same freshwater rivers from which they came, traveling many miles upstream to mate, spawn and die. Juveniles (called smolts) stay in the stream of their birth until they migrate to the ocean, returning upstream after several years to breed and spawn.
In rivers and waterways blocked by dams and locks, humans build fish ladders that enable salmon to complete the migration and spawning cycles that assure their species’ survival.
