The Back Story:

Scherenschnitte  ("Sheer-en-shnit")

The idea of a quilting bee, a gathering of women and children sharing their lives, their art, their spirit and their work, came naturally to the Hawaiians as their culture reflects an undying commitment to family and community.  A passionate, artistic and strongly independent people, they immediately developed their own approach to quilt design and pioneered the technique of appliqué to quilts. Scherenschnitte (“sheer-en-shnit”), a German folk art in existence for centuries, is the art of cutting away the background and leaving the shape of the paper to form the desired image. Hawaiians’, heavily influenced by outside sources, combined this style of the Pennsylvania German missionaries with Chinese cut-paper floral designs with their own unique Hawaiian technique of appliqué in this beautiful quilt design.
