The Back Story:
Sharks - Predators of the Deep
Sharks have diversified into 440 species, ranging in size from the small of only 6.7 in. in length, to the largest shark, which reaches approximately 39 ft. Sharks are found in all seas and are common down to depths of 6,600 ft. They breathe through five to seven gill slits and have several sets of replaceable teeth. Sharks have the ability to determine the direction of a given scent based on the timing of scent detection in each nostril. This is similar to the method mammals use to determine direction of sound. Sharks extraordinary skills as predators fascinate and frighten humans, even as their survival is under serious threat from fishing and other human activities.
