The Back Story:
The Sparrow
The melodious chirp of the sparrow makes it easy to spot these diminutive songbirds in fields and trees in both urban residential and rural farm habitats. They live nearly always near people, although they can also be found in remote places. Small and stocky, with short legs and tail and a stubby “seed-eaters” beak, sparrows – of which there are many sub-species around the world – also dine on small insects.
These gregarious, plump little birds are generally brownish or grayish, and males have a well-marked head. Although not native to North America, the House Sparrow in particular spread quickly once introduced from Europe in the 1850s.
