The Back Story:
The Stars and Stripes
“Old Glory”, one of America’s most cherished national symbols, represents our government and our ideologies as a free nation guaranteeing personal rights. The flag displays 13 equal stripes of alternating red and white; they represent the original colonies that signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776, declaring themselves no longer subject to the British crown’s rule. A dark blue field bears 50 white five-pointed stars – one for every state in the Union – in nine offset horizontal rows.
Frequently flown at private homes as well as from public buildings, the American flag’s iconic imagery is also used for window decals, clothing ornamentation, lapel pins and more. This circular representation was designed by California artist Tomoko Inoue.
