The Back Story:
Steamboats
Before trains, cars, trucks and airplanes existed, steamboats ruled the nation’s rivers. Since the introduction of steam powered boats in the late 1700s, steamboats contributed greatly to the U.S. economy as a means of transporting people, agricultural and industrial supplies. These boats could travel at the astonishing speed of five miles per hour.
There were also dangers that came with steamboat travel such as explosions, sinking, Indian attacks, and daring steamboat races that captured the imagination of the country.
Today, steamboats offer mainly sightseeing trips including harbor and dinner cruises along numerous great American rivers.
